LD619

Hawker Hurricane Mk IIC

Ditsong National Museum of Military History, Saxonwold, Johannesburg, South Africa

LD619 was ordered from Hawker Aircraft Ltd as one of the ninth production block (Contract No. 62305/39) and was built at Langley in the summer of 1943 as a tropicalised Mk IIC. The aircraft in this block of 1,961 were a mixture of Mks IIB, IIC and IV with serials in the range LB542-LF956. LD619 fell into the serial batch LD594-LD632 (39 aircraft). Like most of the batch, it was allocated to No. 22 MU at Silloth, Cumbria, on 27 August, probably arriving there on the 30th, and was almost immediately flown to No. 215 MU at Dumfries, to which it was delivered between 8-10 September. Here it would have been crated for overseas dispatch and taken by road or rail to Glasgow Docks where it was loaded on board the SS Empire Marlowe for shipment to Casablanca.
